Bosnia 2025 - reflections 30 years on

Throughout 2025, Ian Bancroft is collecting reflections on Bosnia-Herzegovina thirty years on from the end of the war. These reflections, supplemented by other insights and stories, explore various dimensions (peacebuilding, reconciliation, culture, education, politics), while reflecting on the past and the future.

The 30th anniversary of the end of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina is a time for reflection. The country's institutional structures remain very complex. The prospects for peace and reconciliation are fraught with difficulties. Many people have already left and others are contemplating their future. These questions are intended to capture a sense about what people think about Bosnia-Herzegovina today, which will be published in a book in early 2026.

To help structure these reflections a series of questions have been posed:

  1. What are your specific reflections about where Bosnia-Herzegovina is 30 years on from the end of the war? Please feel free to focus upon a specific area - peace, reconciliation, culture, governance, education, economy etc.

  2. What makes you optimistic or pessimistic about the future of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and where do you feel the country is headed? Again, please feel free to focus upon a specific area as opposed to a general point of view.

  3. What do you consider to be the biggest missed opportunities and regrets in the last thirty years in Bosnia-Herzegovina?

  4. What would you highlight as a positive development in Bosnia-Herzegovina over the past thirty years?
